Gombe to establish five new tertiary institutions

The Gombe State Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo has inaugurated five committees for the establishment of five new institutions of higher learning in the state.

The five new tertiary institutions to be established are Gombe State University of Science and Technology, Gombe State College of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Gombe State College of Accounting and Management Studies, Gombe State Institute of Journalism and Gombe State Institute of Sports.

While inaugurating the committees in Gombe, Governor Dakwambo said the aim of establishing the new tertiary institutions was to increase access to tertiary education, providing science and technical education, as well as produce agricultural extension workers.

Governor Dankwambo who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Charles Iliya, recalled that at the inception of his administration, he set up a high-powered committee to produce a blueprint that would facilitate the development of education in the state.

“It is, therefore, gratifying to note that we have implemented the recommendations of the committee, which resulted in the improvement of basic education, remodelling and expansion of secondary schools among others,, ” he said.

Governor Dankwambo said if established, the new institutions would train the teeming youths in the state in becoming functional citizens.

He commended the committee members and said their selection was based on their track records in various fields of endeavour while urging them to bring their experience to bear in the discharge of their duty.

Those appointed into the various committees comprising academics and professionals include: Prof Abdullahi Mahadi, Prof Yahaya Shehu, Prof Garba Bello Bala, Prof Abubakar Muazu and Prof Nebath Tanglang as chairmen of respective committees.

In a vote of thanks, Prof Yahaya Shehu thanked the government for finding them worthy of the assignment, promising to give their best towards discharging their responsibility.

The committees have two weeks to submit their reports, which will centre on determining the desirability or otherwise of establishing the various institutions and propose possible locations, as well as define philosophy and design concepts for the institutions.
