This comes a day after soldiers surrounded a Shiite mosque in Kaduna as they gathered to celebrate the Muslim holiday of Ashura – which is symbolic to Shiites worldwide.

Shiites have been banned by the Kaduna state government, which claims they are an ‘unlawful society’.

The leader of the prominent Shiite Muslim group Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, still remains in custody even without being served a court order.
