Ondo State Poll: Akeredolu Emerges as APC Governorship Candidate
Former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, Rotimi Akeredolu has emerged the governorship candidate of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State following after a highly contested primary election held in Akure, state capital.
Twenty-four aspirants contested for the governorship ticket at the primary election that ended in the early hours of Sunday.
Of the 2774 accredited candidates, Akeredolu polled 669 votes defeating 23 other aspirants. Dr Segun Abraham emerged second with a total number of 635 votes.
The chairman of the election committee who is also the Governor of Jigawa State, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar announced Mr. Akeredolu as the winner of the poll at the international event center at about 12.51am..
Voice of Nigeria recalls that one of the most highly primaries ever contested in Nigeria which threatened to tear party apart eventually turned out to be very transparent and credible .
Akeredolu was the main opposition candidate who contested against the incumbent Governor Olusegun Mimiko about three and a half years ago. He was also an Attorney-general in State during the military era.
In an acceptance speech, former NBA President appealed to all other aspirants to remain as one family as they had been throughout the period of campaign.
While appreciating the thoroughness of the committee, Akeredolu urged other aspirants to remain united to ensure that they defeat the ruling party come November 26th governorship election in the state.
“I must salute the thoroughness of the Committee led by our highly revered Governor. You have indeed lived to your billings. You gave us listening ear and you never imposed anything on us. We are twenty four that contested this election. On behalf of all the other aspirants, I expressed our appreciation to you for a job well done.”
“Today is indeed a great day. Our primaries has produced a Governor that will take over from the ruling party. Governor Mimiko knows that we have come and undoubtedly, we are going to produce the next Governor.
“I thank everyone, including the security agents and the press, we will surely change the face of governance in Ondo State.
Others aspirants include: Tunji Abayomi, Ademola Adegoroye, Derin Adesida, Akinyinka Akinola, Patrick Akinyelure, Omotayo Alasoadura, Jumoke Anifowoshe-Ajasin, Jamiu Ekungba and Niran Oladunnni.
Others inlcude: Oke Olusola, Olabimtan Victor, Boye Oyewunmi, Ajayi Borrofice, Olusegun Abraham; Tayo Alasoadura; Bode Ayorinde, Akinwale Akingbade, Akinrinsola Odunayo,Bukola Adetula; Niyi Adegbonmire; Foluso Adefemi, Akinola Olayinka; Tunji Ariyo.
Mr. Kabiru Omosanya, an administrative secretary of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ondo state, led the team that monitored the election.
