VP Osinbajo leaves for Algeria on a two-day working visit

Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo is embarking on a two-day working visit to Algeria from Tuesday, December 13.

During the visit, Professor Osinbajo will hold talks with the President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and also interact with members of the Upper and lower chambers of the Algerian legislature.

He is expected to visit a food processing plant and also meet representatives of the Nigerian community in Algeria.

Diplomatic and Economic relations

The visit is ‘expected to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Algeria while reviewing specific areas of security cooperation.’

Likewise, both countries would also use the opportunity to harmonise their positions on multilateral issues of common interest and share ideas on how ‘to address a number of international challenges confronting Africa.’

Bi National Commission

Tthe Algerian President had sent a Special Envoy to Nigeria, in person of the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ramtane Lamamra, who reiterated the country’s support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

The Minister called for“ increased collaboration between both countries in the areas of intelligence gathering and deradicalisation programmes.’’

In 2002, both countries set up the Nigeria-Algeria Bi-National Commission to enhance bilateral cooperation and signed a number of Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding, MoU.

The MoU includes those related to the creation of the ‘Development Corridor’, with such projects as the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Project, the Trans-Sahara Highway Project and the Trans-Saharan Fiber Optic Project.

The Minister of State Foreign Affairs, Mrs Khadija Abba Ibrahim and the Deputy Chief of Staff in his office, Mr. Ade Ipaye, accompanied the Vice President on the visit.

He is expected back on Wednesday, December 14.
